SEEKING ASSISTANCE WITH ART PROJECT: Regional / National: INDPLS, IN: Call To Artists/Quilters/Sewers/Donations/Volunteers/Discussion Groups/

Dear Community: After nearly 10 years of research and 6 years since the first quilt in this series was completed, I have finally put all the pieces together to finish The Lynch Quilts Project, and to do so, I ask you, the community, to help me bring this project to completion.

Project Overview:
The Lynch Quilts Project (LQP) is a community-based effort which explores the history and ramifications of racial violence, specifically lynching, in the United States through the textile tradition of quilting. This project consists of a series of six quilts tackling the lynching phenomenon from various perspectives including collective memory, communal conflict, gender, healing and politics. The quilts combine a variety of traditional and contemporary quilting and textile techniques to examine how the past, present and future are intricately connected.

At the core of this project, is a healing ritual, which requires the hands of the community to help reclaim and heal this history, and in the process recognize those that have fallen victim to this act of racial/ethnic terrorism and oppression. As such, the project cannot be completed by me alone or any one person, but must be realized through the communal process.

Project History:
The first quilt in the series, Her Name Was Laura Nelson, was completed in 2004 and since its debut has been exhibited in a variety of venues with diverse audiences. At each showing viewers have the opportunity to record their stories and opinions concerning issues of ethnic conflict in a project journal and contribute a piece of fabric to the quilts. To date, many stories and more than 100 lbs. of fabric donations have been collected.

Project Goals:
By working with a diverse cross section of individuals and communities across the nation and internationally, my goal is to ensure that the quilt tops for 4 of the remaining 5 quilts are completed by Spring/Summer 2012. And you know what? I think we as a community can do it! A catalog of the entire Lynch Quilts Project is planned and will include the names and bio information of all participants.

What You Can Do:
At present, assistance is specifically being sought for Quilts II, IV and V. Quilt III is in already in progress. Quilt VI is a unique experiment, which presently exists in a virtual format. Participation in this stage of its development requires setting up displays about LQP at various community, cultural and art events. If you are interested in participating in this community action, please let me know and I can forward additional information concerning Quilt VI. For those of you not interested in sewing, but more interested in discussing these topics in the community, this may be the portion of the LQP for you.

I want to say “Thank You” in advance for your participation in LQP and helping to spread the word. If you would like to stay updated on LQP as it continues to manifest please join our Facebook Page – The Lynch Quilts Project or send an email to lcrowestorm@yahoo.com to be included in the monthly newsletter about the Project. Make sure to include in the subject line of your email “LQP Newsletter.” If you would like to see additional information on the first quilt in this series completed in 2004, Her Name Was Laura Nelson, please view my website, www.TheLynchQuiltsProject.com or www.LaShawndaCroweStorm.com.

BEYOND PRINTMAKING: National: Lubbock, CO: Event Dates; February 3rd - March 4th, 2012. Beyond Printmaking is an art competition and exhibition organized by the Landmark Arts and the printmaking area in the Texas Tech University School of Art. Open to professional artists living in the U.S. who are 18 and older. All media expanding the notion of printmaking, including time-based and installation, will be considered. An artist's statement illuminating the artist's conception of printmaking must be included with the entry. Work must be original and completed within the last 3 years.

As technology is changing ever more rapidly, many contemporary artists who originally started with printmaking as their primary medium are using interdisciplinary approaches to embrace the needs of time. Contemporary artists find ways to create visually captivating and socially or politically engaging discourses through interdisciplinary approaches. As much as printmaking has been loved for its traditional resonance, its versatility applied in multimedia does not see limitations. In this third exhibition, we are looking for artists who have a vision of printmaking beyond the traditional practices, who push the technological and conceptual limits of what is considered printmaking.

$2,500 in Cash Prizes to be awarded by the Juror at her discretion.
Juror: Melanie Yazzie, University of Colorado at Boulder. Deadline: November 4, 2011. Notification; December 16, 2011. INFO: 806-742-1947 , landmarkarts@ttu.edu .

TRUE CRIME: National: Pittsburgh, PA: "Call for True Crime Essays." For an upcoming issue, Creative Nonfiction is seeking new essays about true crimes—detailed reports of premeditation, follow-through and aftermath, whether gleaned from police blotters or the news, passed down as small-town legend or family lore, or committed in cold blood. We want true stories of petty theft, identity theft, embezzlement or first-degree murder; of jaywalking, selling (or maybe buying) weed or assault; of crimes and punishments and unsolved mysteries. Think "The Devil in the White City" (Larson), "In Cold Blood" (Capote) and "Iphigenia in Forest Hills" (Malcolm); or "Half a Life" (Strauss), "Lucky" (Sebold) and "The Night of the Gun" (Carr). If it’s against the law and someone—maybe even you!—did it anyway, we want to know all about it. We’re looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice. Essays can be serious, humorous or somewhere in between. Creative Nonfiction editors will award $1000 for Best Essay.

Guidelines: Essays must be unpublished, 4,000 words maximum, postmarked by September 30, 2011, and clearly marked “True Crime” on both the essay and the outside of the envelope. RUDOLF NISSIM PRIZE FOR THE BEST SCORE: International: New York, NY: The ASCAP Foundation Rudolf Nissim Prize - Accepting Submission of New Compostions. Rudolf Nissim, former head of ASCAP's Foreign Department, left a substantial bequest to The ASCAP Foundation for an annual prize for the best score, requiring a conductor, submitted by a writer member of ASCAP. Dr. Nissim joined the ASCAP staff immediately after he settled in the United States in 1940. He had been Managing Director of AKM, the Austrian Performing Rights Society. His first accomplishment at ASCAP was the establishment of a Serious Music Department for licensing the performances of works by the Society's concert composers. For nearly four decades thereafter, his dedication to contemporary music and its creators was an inspiration to his colleagues. The ASCAP Foundation/Rudolf Nissim Prize is a fitting memorial to this devoted friend of composers.
A $5000 Cash Prize is presented annually to an ASCAP concert composer for a work requiring a conductor that has not been performed professionally. A jury of conductors selects the winning score. Previous winners are ineligible.

How to apply: Each applicant must submit the score of one published or unpublished concert work requiring a conductor scored for full orchestra, chamber orchestra, or large wind/brass ensemble (with or without soloists and/or chorus) not previously premiered or scheduled for professional premiere at any future date. A work with a performance history will be eligible only if earlier performances were, in the judgment of the Committee, clearly non-professional. For this exception to be granted, information regarding previous performances (including programs and announcements) must be submitted with the score, in a separate envelope.

Works which set a text protected by copyright must include permission of the author or the author's representative. Download Application Materials in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format*

Judges: A committee of three conductors. Submission Deadline: Postmark no later than November 15, 2011. Score Entry must be received no later than December 1, 2011.

Anonymity: All works must be submitted anonymously, with a pseudonym appearing on the score. A separate envelope containing the pseudonym AND the actual name, address and biography of the composer should be attached.

Inquiries and/or submissions should be addressed to:

TOP TEN ART COMPETITION: International: Artrom Gallery. Now Accepting Submissions to "Abstract Consequences." Abstract Art... is part of the constant change and vital searching that energizes every true art. (Leonard Brooks)

To be a poet with line, form, color, space and composition and to use each of these elements to evoke something that moves beyond object and materials is the work of the abstract artist. To have the capacity to comunicate sensations directly without definitions, parameters or concept is an extremely delicate and intense process.

Artists who offer themselves up to this creative process and have the courage to break boundaries and limits merit our attention and respect. It is a matter of letting go into the process, of being present in the moment in which inspiration takes possession and moves the creative instinct.

Now accepting entry submissions in painting, photography and digital work. We encourage all artists to participate by sending in your best 5 images. Entry Deadline: September 30th, 2011. INFO:
